Following their 51-17 blowout of Colorado Thursday, the Arizona State Sun Devils are starting to gain some traction among national media members and coaches across the country.
While the early portion of the 2012 schedule hasn’t exactly tested Todd Graham and Co., a 5-1 start is a 5-1 start any which way you slice it.
Sunday, Graham’s squad was rewarded for their recent routs in conference play, as ASU was voted No. 24 in the USA Today Coaches’ Poll.
The Sun Devils began their 2011 season in similar fashion, storming out of the gates to a 5-1 record. Last year’s squad was ranked as high as No. 18 in the AP Poll and No. 20 in the Coaches’ Poll.
However, a 1-6 finish to the season kept ASU out of a premiere bowl game and ended Dennis Erickson’s tenure in Tempe.
Ironically, for the second consecutive year the Sun Devils’ 5-1 start will be tested yet again by perennial conference favorite Oregon Thursday night at Sun Devil Stadium.
Ranked No. 2 in the country, the Ducks come to town for a prime time Pac-12 South divisional showdown off a bye week.
Oregon is one of four teams — Oregon State, USC and Stanford are the others — in the Pac-12 to be ranked in both the AP and Coaches’ Poll.
