J.R. Smith’s daughter is proud her dad wasn’t kicked off Cavs

Jun 16, 2016, 5:15 PM

Meet Demi, the daughter of Cleveland Cavaliers guard J.R. Smith.

Demi is an honest girl. How do we know?

Because when ESPN SportsCenter anchor Lindsay Czarniak asked her what’s it like to watch her dad play in a critical Game 6 of the NBA Finals, she got real.

“I’m just proud of him because he made the championship without getting kicked off the team,” Demi said.

Smith, who came to Cleveland with a reputation for not taking his professional basketball career all that seriously, certainly deserves praise for committing to changing his behavior with the Cavs. He spoke at length about his lifestyle changes to ESPN’s Brian Windhorst earlier in the finals series.

In that interview, Smith opened up about how his very honest daughter made one comment that had a profound affect on him.

“She said, ‘I don’t want to give away these toys.’ I said, ‘Baby, that’s a sacrifice you’re going to have to make. If you want some new toys, you have give some,'” Smith said. “She looked at me and said, ‘Daddy what are you going to sacrifice?’ I was like, wow. I had to think about it. What was I sacrificing?

“I always talked about playing good defense but I never did it. It always turned into if I played well on offense, I felt I did a good job. This year I decided I was going to let how I played defense dictate how I played.

Demi is not only honest. She is also wise.
