It’s the first-ever Arizona Sports Uniform Playoffs!
Over the next several weeks, we’ll be polling you, the sports fans of Arizona, to determine the best-dressed pro team in the history of The Grand Canyon State.
We’ve ranked 48 different uniforms worn by major-league teams based in the Valley for voting purposes.
In the first round, we’ll feature four different matchups per day. Seeds 17-48 will be voted on in Week 1, with the top 16 seeds earning byes into the second round.
Without further ado, here are today’s four first-round matchups (voting closes at 7:00 a.m. Wednesday, July 20):
Round 1 – #32 D-backs current black alternate. vs. #33 Suns Nash-era home whites
Despite being the youngest team in the Valley’s sports history, the D-backs have 15 different uniforms included in our field of 48. The first is the 32nd-seeded current black alternates, which were unveiled last December in time for the 2016 season.
The opponent is the Steve Nash-era Phoenix Suns’ home white uniforms. Unveiled in 2001, the Suns wore these on their home floor at the “Purple Palace” until the completion of the 2012-13 season.
Round 1 – #17 D-backs current Sedona Red alternate vs. #48 Coyotes green desert-themed alternate
The D-backs current Sedona red alternate is the #17 seed. Although these jerseys (along with many others unveiled in December of 2015) have been panned by critics, they look good on the field and have been popular among fans at Chase Field.
The Coyotes’ first alternate jersey was this green number, which altered the “Kachina Coyote” logo to include only the head and was trimmed with desert landscaping around the bottom border and lizards on each shoulder.
Round 1 – #24 Coyotes roads with brick red shoulders vs. #48 D-backs original pinstriped roads
In 2007, the NHL switched to the “Edge” jersey template, which meant shirt tails were now tapered as opposed to square. The Coyotes altered their look with this version by removing the three horizontal stripes around the tail and by adding a brick red shoulder yoke. The Coyotes wore these jerseys through the end of the 2014-15 season.
The Diamondbacks wore these rare pinstriped road uniforms from their inception in 1998 until 2000. They were the only D-backs uniforms to feature a number on the front until the current look was introduced in 2015.
Round 1 – #25 D-backs second-generation Sedona Red alternates vs. #40 Cardinals road white jerseys with blue trim
The D-backs radically changed their uniform look in 2007, moving away from the purple and turquoise motif to incorporate Sedona Red, including these alternate jerseys, which were worn both at home and on the road through the 2015 season.
In 1996, the Cardinals altered their road white jerseys, removing the black trim from the numbers, shrinking the size of the Arizona flag on each sleeve and adding a blue stripe to the sleeve decoration. They mostly wore these jerseys with red pants with white stripes, but occasionally wore an all-white look.
