Seahawks show Alan Branch the money, he takes it

Jul 29, 2011, 3:35 PM | Updated: 4:48 pm

The Cardinals traded up to draft Michigan defensive lineman Alan Branch in 2007.

It took four seasons, but he finally started to flash the ability that convinced coach Ken Whisenhunt he was worth moving up to get.

And now his career will continue in a place that is not Arizona.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Seattle Seahawks and Branch agreed on a two-year, $8 million contract, with $4 million guaranteed.

In a word, wow.

Branch was a colossal disappointment for Arizona up until his last season in the Valley which, incidentally enough, was also his “contract year.”

Finishing with a career-best 35 tackles, he showed promise as a defensive end, and the Cardinals appeared to want him back.

But, Branch got a nice contract offer from a division rival and took it, leaving the Cardinals with a hole along the defensive line and the Seahawks with a player who they hope will continue to improve, rather then just rest on his laurels (and new millions).
