Arizona Sports Uniform Playoffs: Second Round, Day #4

We’re into the second week of our first-ever Arizona Sports Uniform Playoffs!
The field of potential Arizona sports fashion contenders has been whittled down to 24 after two days of second-round voting.
There were upsets, but none bigger than the tournament’s final seed, the Phoenix Coyotes’ green desert-themed alternates, squeaking out a narrow victory over the D-backs’ current Sedona Red alternates. Over 830 votes were cast in that showdown, and the Coyotes’ greens won by a minuscule margin.
This week, we’ll get a look at the top 16 seeds in our field, which include many of the Phoenix Suns’ earlier uniforms.
Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday of this week, you’ll have four matchups to vote on each day.

#3 Cardinals black alternates vs. #35 Suns original orange alternates
Let’s face it … black is a really popular color for sports jerseys. The Arizona Cardinals — who for a long time subscribed to having very conservative-looking uniforms — joined the black jersey party in 2010. The alternate jerseys, which are normally worn twice per year, have been a big seller among fans of the Cardinals.
The Suns’ original orange alternates, which were introduced in 2003, scored a first-round victory over the D-backs’ current home whites, getting 59 percent of the vote.

#14 Coyotes red uniforms with bottom stripes vs. #46 Coyotes kachina black uniforms
The Coyotes drastically changed their uniform look in 2003, ditching the “Kachina” look and going with a more realistic-looking of coyote on the sweater. Also gone was the green from the previous iteration. Phoenix wore these on the ice until 2007, when the NHL switched the jersey template.
The ‘Yotes’ black kachina road jerseys, which were one of the lowest seeds in the tournament, won their first-round match against the team’s current white road uniforms, getting 59 percent of the vote.

#11 Coyotes road whites with bottom stripes vs. #22 D-backs sleeveless gray roads
The Coyotes’ roads are the cousin of the red home version in the previous matchup. This version didn’t feature the brick red shoulder yoke that the next version had.
The D-backs’ sleeveless gray road uniforms, which they started wearing in 2001, got 60 percent of the vote in the first round to defeat the Suns’ current home uniforms.

#6 Suns original purple roads vs. #38 Suns Nash-era purple roads
It’s a second-round battle of Suns’ purples!
The original-style road uniforms were introduced in 1968 and worn through the 1991-92 season. Like the home version, the team switched to the popular Western font on the road jerseys in 1973. Here’s what they looked like before the switch.
The Nash-era purple road jerseys won in the first round, defeating the Coyotes’ Edge template brick red homes by getting 60 percent of the vote.
