With Justin Bethel’s injury still lingering, the Arizona Cardinals appear to be looking at a backup option in case Bethel is not 100 percent in time for the season opener.

According to Aaron Wilson of NationalFootballPost.com, the Cardinals plan to work out veteran cornerback Alan Ball on Thursday.

Ball is an unrestricted free agent who played for the Chicago Bears last season, where he had 20 tackles and five pass breakups.

Prior to signing a one-year deal with the Bears, the 31-year-old had stints with the Dallas Cowboys, Houston Texans and Jacksonville Jaguars. In 2013 with the Jaguars, Ball had 47 tackles, 14 passes defended and two interceptions.

Last season Bethel made five starts in the Cardinals’ secondary. At some point during the season, however, he suffered a left-foot fracture and had surgery in April, which kept him out of OTAs and mini-camp.

The Cardinals placed Bethel on the physically unable to perform list along with Mathieu, Frostee Rucker and Zack Wagenmann just before training camp started.
