Lately, the armed forces have been getting creative when it comes to honoring their histories on the uniforms of their football teams.
Navy rolled out a series of hand-painted helmets that depicted an array of battleships and submarines, and now the Air Force announced Sunday it is following suit.
For a Sept. 10 game against Georgia State, the Falcons will wear their “Airpower Legacy Series” alternate helmets fresh with the Air Force’s tiger shark teeth icon that usually is painted on the noses of their aircraft.
The shark teeth first appeared on British P-40 Tomahawks but later became a staple on the American P-40 “Flying Tigers” of the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. Since, they have appeared on other Air Force planes, including the P-51s, A-7s, F-4s, F-105s, F-16s, HC-130s and A-10s.
And now, they’ll be worn by the Falcons football team. The Falcons’ official 2016 schedule, which included P-40 fighters in the background, hinted at the helmet alternates before they were released.
