D-backs lose late lead as Dickerson’s double clears bases in Padres’ win

It was a game with a resounding theme of hits.

The Arizona Diamondbacks’ first eight batters in the lineup each earned a hit, with four of them even earning multi-hit games. The San Diego Padres had 12 hits themselves and they also had four different batters tally two or more hits. Heck, even one fan took a hit to the chest down the first base line while another got hit right above the eye on the opposite side (both would be OK).

The D-backs jumped ahead after Michael Bourn’s hit in the eighth inning gave them a 7-6 lead, but it was Alex Dickerson’s bases-clearing double that proved to be the difference in the Padres’ 9-8 win Thursday night at Petco Park.

Right-handed relief pitcher Jake Barrett got the first two outs in the eighth, but gave up two singles and walked Yangervis Solarte to load the bases. He would take the loss after Dickerson drilled one to deep left center off of Enrique Burgos.

The Diamondbacks rallied earlier in the ninth when Jake Lamb walked and later scored on rookie Mitch Haniger’s third hit of the contest, but with two men on and one out, the next two batters were unable to plate the tying run.

In the top of the eighth inning, Diamondbacks’ Rickie Weeks Jr. walked to lead off the inning and later stole second. After Jean Segura struck out, Bourn poked one up the middle to score Weeks and give the D-backs their first lead since the third inning.

The hits started early for both teams, as the lead off hitter of the game Segura doubled to deep center, and later scored on Padres starting pitcher Paul Clemens’ wild pitch.

Welington Castillo got his first of three hits in the opening frame and gave the D-backs an early 2-0 lead. Castillo and Segura both came up big for the Diamondbacks later when the team found itself down 5-2. Castillo had an RBI single in the fifth inning, and it was a Segura two-run blast that knotted the game at five in the sixth.

Segura’s home run took D-backs starting pitcher Archie Bradley off the hook after he gave up five runs in 4.2 innings of work. The right-hander allowed seven hits and three walks off of 100 pitches, 57 for strikes.
