ASU guard Corey Hawkins to transfer

May 10, 2011, 10:06 PM | Updated: 11:06 pm

Just as a college basketball team is supposed to begin taking shape the Arizona State Sun Devils find themselves needing to replace someone who was expected to be a key contributor next season.

Corey Hawkins, a sophomore, has informed the coaching staff he intends to transfer, according to the Arizona Republic.

The sophomore guard’s decision is somewhat of a surprise, considering his playing time increased as last season progressed. Hawkins averaged 14 minutes over ASU’s final seven games. For the season, Hawkins, slowed by a nagging ankle injury, averaged 2 points and 1.7 rebounds in 8.2 minutes. The Arizona career scoring leader in high school, Hawkins shot 34.5 percent from the field, 30 percent from 3-point range and 50 percent from the foul line.

Players transfer for all sorts of reasons, including playing time, style, differences with the coaching staff and being uncomfortable with the school itself. However, Hawkins is from the area and he was expected to play more as a sophomore, so it’s a little puzzling as to why he would bail on the program at this point.
