ASU likely without its leader at Colorado, Utah

Jan 17, 2012, 8:31 PM | Updated: 8:33 pm

Trent Lockett is leading his team in points, rebounds and
steals.

This week he’ll likely be leading them from the bench.

“Trent right now is unlikely in the foreseeable future but
we’ll continue to evaluate him on a day-by-day basis,”
said head coach Herb Sendek Tuesday.

Lockett is dealing with a sprained ankle he suffered
midway through the second half of Saturday’s win over
Oregon State.

“Obviously, that’s a significant loss for our team,”
Sendek continued. “No one player can make up for his
absence. We’re going to have to do it collectively.”

There’s no denying Lockett is ASU’s best player. He’s
also their most important, averaging the second most
minutes on the floor (35 per game) in the Pac-12.

Sendek added that even if Lockett can’t play he will still
travel with the team this week to Colorado and Utah.
“He’s going to be contributing leadership.

“Even yesterday in practice while he’s wearing a boot and
on crutches he was bouncing around and offering his
support, encouragement and teaching to the players. He
was like having another coach at practice.”

That’s one area according to Sendek where Lockett has
really stepped up.

“He has clearly established himself as the voice of
our team. I think his poise and composure has really
helped our guys not flinch in some tight spots.”
