Carson, Marshall’s late 3 help ASU to overtime win over Cal: By the numbers

Arizona State’s men’s team jumped out to a 12-point halftime lead Wednesday night in Berkeley, Calif., and was in control for most of the game, but the California Golden Bears came roaring back in the last six minutes, even taking a lead with 44 seconds left.

Bears forward David Kravish made two free throws with 26 seconds left to put Cal up by three, but a Jermaine Marshall 3-pointer off a Jahii Carson assist with 19 seconds to go saved ASU from blowing the game.

The two teams went into overtime, and the Sun Devils got their swagger back from there, running away to an 89-78 decision. Both teams moved to 5-3 in conference, and ASU (16-5) retained the better overall record. The Golden Bears fell to 14-7 with the overtime loss.

Here’s a look at Wednesday’s game by the numbers:

3

With their third win in a row, Sun Devils are now tied with Cal and Washington for third place in the Pac-12. ASU has the best overall record of the three.

4

Carson had four fouls going into overtime and was able to avoid disqualification as the Sun Devils pulled away. Starting center Jordan Bachynski, however, wasn’t so lucky, as he picked up his fifth in the extra period.

6

Four ASU players — Marshall, Shaquille McKissic, Eric Jacobsen and Jonathan Gilling — pulled down six rebounds Wednesday. Arizona State outrebounded Cal 39-32 in the game.

The Sun Devils’ defense only allowed six points to the Golden Bears in the extra five minutes, while they themselves put up 17.

8

Bachynski blocked one shot in the game, putting him eight blocks away in his career from tying the conference record held by former Arizona Wildcat Anthony Cook. The Sun Devils senior had a quiet night on the offensive end, scoring just four points.

12

Gilling hit 4-of-5 free throws in the game, and has made 12-of-14 in in-conference games. Not bad considering he was shooting 4-for-12 from the line before ASU began Pac-12 play.

13

There was a big free throw disparity in the game, as ASU got 13 more tries than the Bears did. The Sun Devils made 24-of-33 from the charity stripe (72.7 percent), while Cal made just 12-of-20 (60 percent).

15

Bench scoring was scarce for both teams. ASU’s bench scored 15, with Gilling getting seven and Bo Barnes reaching eight. Cal’s bench only scored seven points.

22

Marshall finished with 22 points on 8-of-13 shooting, including three 3-pointers. The 6-foot-4 senior reached the 20-point plateau for the seventh time this season, and the Sun Devils are 6-1 when that happens.

29

Carson poured in 29 points, including 11 of the Sun Devils’ 17 in overtime. The sophomore also added seven assists, but he did turn the ball over six times. His 29 points are the most since he scored 40 on Nov. 19 at UNLV.

30

The Golden Bears opened with 30 points in the first half while holding ASU to 30 in the second half, forcing overtime.

42

Arizona State opened with 42 points in the first half while only scoring 30 in the second.

47.4

The Sun Devils shot a sizzling 47.4 percent from 3-point land, converting nine out of 19 long bombs against the Bears. Cal, meanhwile, only made 4-of-13 3-point shots.
