The Arizona State Sun Devils tried to follow in their rival’s footsteps in beating Stanford on the road, as the University of Arizona did Wednesday, but it just wasn’t in the cards.

Just as the Wildcats had done, ASU played Stanford close for most of the afternoon, but the Cardinal was able to escape with a 76-70 win Saturday at Maples Pavilion.

The outcome put both the Sun Devils and the Cardinal tied with Colorado for fifth place in the Pac-12 with a 5-4 conference record. Stanford improved to 14-7, but Arizona State, 16-6, retained the better overall mark.

The loss to Stanford broke Arizona State’s three-game winning streak, all of which were in conference play.

Center Jordan Bachynski blocked two shots, putting him six away in his career from tying former Arizona Wildcat Anthony Cook for the conference record in blocks. Bachynski also added 10 rebounds Saturday — all on the defensive end — and scored seven points on 2-of-5 shooting.

ASU received just seven measly points from its bench — guard Bo Barnes scored five and forward Brandan Kearney made two free throws. The normally surehanded Jonathan Gilling was not able to score, despite taking five shots (all 3-pointers). Stanford’s bench, however, wasn’t any better, also contributing only seven points.

Arizona State gave up 15 offensive rebounds to the Cardinal, which got 10 more shots at the basket in the game. The Cardinal also had four fewer turnovers. The extra shots were critical in the game even though ASU shot a higher percentage.

Guard Jermaine Marshall scored 22 points for the second game in a row. He made a whopping six 3-pointers out of eight attempts. Those six 3s were one off the senior’s career high — set earlier this season against Texas Tech when he made seven. Before Saturday’s loss, the Sun Devils were 6-1 when Marshall reaches the 20-point mark.

Sophomore guard Jahii Carson scored 24, his third-highest total of the season. Carson made 9-of-13 shots and hit three 3-pointers. He also had three assists and turned the ball over five times.

ASU gave up a game-high 28 points to forward Dwight Powell, a mark which also tied the senior’s season high, even though he shot just 8-for-19 from the floor. Junior guard Chasson Randle was the only other Cardinal to reach double-figures, finishing with 21 points.

The size of Stanford’s frontcourt helped the Cardinal to a 40-32 advantage on the boards. The Cardinal also topped the Sun Devils in shots blocked. Bachynski’s two blocks were the only swats for ASU, while Stanford’s Josh Huestis and Stefan Nastic combined for five.

Both teams had a pretty poor afternoon from the field — ASU shot 41.2 percent while Stanford finished at 39.3 — but the Sun Devils had a strong showing from 3-point land, mostly due to Marshall and Carson. ASU made 11-of-27 shots from downtown (40.7 percent).

Even though the Sun Devils went into the half up by one and put up 37 points in the final 20 minutes, the team allowed 44 points in the second half to Stanford and played from behind down the stretch.
