Arizona State holds on to seal win over Stanford: By the Numbers

Mar 6, 2015, 7:06 AM | Updated: 7:44 am

A career night for Arizona State’s Shaquielle McKissic turned into a win for the Sun Devils at home, 67-62 over Stanford.

After an early 14-point lead, ASU (16-14, 8-9 Pac-12) found themselves scrambling to hold a lead as the Cardinal fought back, tying it up in the second period 47-47.

Bo Barnes had a crucial steal in the game’s final moments and the Sun Devils hit 5-of-7 free throws in the last 33 seconds to seal the upset over Stanford and get within one game of .500 in the conference.

Foul trouble for Arizona State helped with a second-half Stanford resurgence as both bigs, Savon Goodman and Eric Jacobsen, had to sit.

But Tra Holder, who controlled much of the game’s tempo, contributed 15 points and four assists alongside McKissic’s stellar connections to keep the Sun Devils out of reach.

What did the win at Wells Fargo look like, by the numbers?

40-22

Prowess inside the paint was a huge factor in the ASU victory. The Devils outscored Stanford 40-22 down low, although just nine of them came from a four-five player in Goodman. Holder and McKissic’s repeated penetration pushed the paint battle in favor of Arizona State.

2

Stanford led by two points with 9:55 left in the first half, but wouldn’t lead again. ASU finished the half on a 16-2 run and never looked back.

21-12

Stanford gave the ball up 17 times and Arizona State 14 — yet ASU capitalized better, scoring 21 points off Stanford turnovers as opposed to the Cardinal’s 12.

15

Holder’s 15 points were just one shy of his career high and the second straight game in which he’s scored in double digits.

8-5

Arizona State started conference play 0-4 but since then have posted an 8-5 record.

22-3

ASU continued its impressive home record and is 22-3 in its last 25 home games.

The Devils will attempt to end the regular season with a .500 record in conference play when they take on Cal (17-13, 7-10) in a matinee matchup Saturday.

Tip-off is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. with pregame coverage beginning 30 minutes earlier on Arizona Sports 98.7 FM.
