Arizona State’s 2016 basketball recruiting class took another hit Wednesday when freshman Romello White was ruled academically ineligible for the upcoming season.
CBS Sports’ Jon Rothstein first reported that the 6-foot-9, 220 pound forward will require a redshirt year. White will still be able to practice with the Sun Devils this season.
A 4-star recruit ranked the No. 21 power forward in the 2016 class, White becomes the second loss to coach Bobby Hurley’s incoming recruiting class. Three-star freshman forward Vitaliy Shibel will miss his freshman year after suffering an ACL tear in August.
Hurley’s five-man class has two more players to provide frontcourt depth in unranked 6-foot-9 big man Ramon Vila out of Spain and 4-star small forward Sam Cunliffe, who is ranked as the No. 10 small forward in the 2016 class. Arizona State will also have 6-foot-10 center Jethro Tshisumpa, a 4-star prospect, joining the team this year.
Nonetheless, the front court depth could still be an issue.
Forward Savon Goodman transferred, and the team will lean heavily on senior Obinna Oleka and redshirt freshman Andre Adams, who is coming off his second ACL injury.
