Preseason games don’t tend to mean much in the grand scheme of an NFL season.
For quarterback Logan Thomas, the Arizona Cardinals’ preseason opener will be one of the most meaningful games of his life.
Cardinals coach Bruce Arians said earlier this week that Thomas, the team’s 2014 fourth-round pick out of Virginia Tech, will see action in the second half of the Cards’ game against the Houston Texans at 5:30 p.m. Saturday at University of Phoenix Stadium.
“I’m excited for it. I’m ready to go,” he said. “(It’s) living out a dream, for one, and just having my opportunity to do it, especially with the guys that I’ve been around for this training camp and into the spring.”
Thomas is expected to compete with 2012 Cardinals draft pick Ryan Lindley for the team’s No. 3 quarterback position behind starter Carson Palmer and backup Drew Stanton.
Arians said Lindley will see playing time in the Cardinals’ second preseason game against the Minnesota Vikings on Aug. 16.
Thomas said the in-game experience will be valuable for as he continues to digest the Cardinals’ complicated offensive scheme.
“It’s a pretty difficult offense to figure out. It takes a little bit of time. As I keep going forward, I’m learning more and more every day, and that’s what I have to do.”
