Arizona Cardinals GM: Likely keeping six WRs, but trades are possible

LISTEN: Steve Keim, AZ Cardinals GM

The first round of NFL cuts is on Aug. 26. At that point, each team is allowed to carry a maximum of 75 players on its active roster.

Less than one week later, on Aug. 30, teams must be down to 53 players.

That means squads across the league will have some tough decisions to make, likely being forced to part with talented players who they simply don’t have room for. Some may sneak onto practice squads, but others are likely to end up on someone else’s roster.

So, if a team knows it’s going to lose a player, it may try and swing a trade and get something in return.

“We’ll look at every opportunity and, really, my phone hasn’t rang yet,” Cardinals GM Steve Keim told Doug and Wolf on Arizona Sports 98.7 FM Monday. “That will probably heat up closer to next week when you’re talking about trades and that sort of thing.”

That’s not to say there has not been interest in some of the players, as Keim pointed out teams have expressed interest in some of Arizona’s wide receivers.

Larry Fitzgerald, Michael Floyd, Ted Ginn, Jr. and John Brown appear to be locks to make the roster, leaving Jaron Brown, Brittan Golden and Walt Powell, among others, battling for one or two last spots.

Golden leads Cardinals wideouts this preseason with 11 receptions. Powell has caught five passes for 92 yards, while Brown, who has had an outstanding training camp, has gained 101 yards and one touchdown on his four receptions.

One of them is probably not going to make the Cardinals, though they may be able to help another roster.

“When you look at the depth and you look at how some of those guys have played, like Jaron Brown and Walt Powell and Brittan Golden, but just look at how they’ve played I’d say it’s probably more realistic we’ll probably keep six wide receivers,” the GM said. “I was very encouraged to see the way that group is playing.”
