Arizona Wildcats football searches for a coach

Nov 21, 2011, 4:53 PM | Updated: 5:23 pm

Aren’t coaching searches fun!

Well, sometimes. Arizona fired head football coach Mike
Stoops on October 10, and director of athletics Greg Byrne
said the search for a replacement would begin immediately.

Plenty of names will be linked to Tucson, with some being
bigger than others, but Byrne said he will not comment on
anything until a decision has been made.

Of course that won’t stop anyone from speculating on who
the choice will be, and we’ll help you keep up with all
the latest rumors here on this page.

Leach: “Anybody would be interested” in Arizona Wildcats
job; but is he?

Mike Leach has heard “nothing in particular, just
murmuring,” about whether he’ll be considered for the
Arizona Wildcats’ vacant head coaching job. But the former
Texas Tech coach said today that the UA position is an
attractive one.

Greg Hansen: Coach hunt may lead to Fedora at S. Miss.

As advertised, the Greg Byrne Stealth Tour II has been as
quiet as a Tuesday night in Gila Bend.

Except for the predictable Chris Petersen-Mike Leach-Mike
Bellotti whispers, the GBST II has not elicited a peep.

Petersen turns down Wildcats head coaching
job

Current Boise State football head coach Chris Petersen was
favored to become the new head coach of the Arizona
Wildcats, but he apparently has removed himself from
consideration.

Mike Leach: No contact with Arizona

Former Texas Tech coach Mike Leach — whose name has been
circulated as a potential choice for the vacant Arizona
Wildcats coaching job — said he has neither made nor
received any contact from the administration.

Greg Hansen: Assistant coaches: temp workers
all

Follow the bouncing (bounced) coaches: In his first year
as a full-time college football assistant, UA running
backs coach Garret Chachere was part of a 1-9 team at
Bloomsburg (Pa.) University. Verdict: Everybody fired. He
was 24. One and done.

Arizona football coaching search: 10 things I
believe

Arizona athletic director Greg Byrne is going to go all
out to get Petersen, the Boise State head coach. He
should. Petersen is the biggest, best, most established,
most “available” coach in the West.

Greg Hansen: UA football needs CEO, return of
fun

The truth, the whole truth, half-truths, shades of the
truth and other items admissible in the UA’s Search For
Mr. Wonderful.

Arizona Wildcats football’s interest should
not be mutual for Boise State’s Chris Petersen

Every wish list starts with Boise State coach Chris
Petersen because of his reputation and a friendship with
UA Athletic Director Greg Byrne that goes back to their
years at Oregon in the mid-1990s.

Mike Leach As Arizona Wildcats Head Coach:
Could It Work?

Leach has been out of the coaching game for two years, and
all signals indicate that that the former pirate leader of
the Texas Tech Red Raiders is ready to come back and coach
again.

Arizona football: Limbo starts up new
dance

Taylor McNamara’s guest was late, with no explanation
given, but he wasn’t panicking.

Maybe Mike Stoops’ flight to San Diego to visit McNamara,
one of the UA’s top recruits, must have been delayed or
maybe he was stuck in traffic.

Greg Hansen: Coach Search 2011 nothing like
2003

In the fall of 2003, I went on a wild chase from Tucson to
Cincinnati to Boise and finally to Lubbock, Texas, in an
attempt to interview the men who wanted to be Arizona’s
next football coach.

Search for Stoops replacement will be nothing
like 2003 search

University of Arizona’s Athletic Director Greg Byrne said
that his list of coaches full “with literally 100 names”
which is completely different from the 2003 search that
featured only four main candidates.

ESPN reporter lists some possible head
coaching replacements

ESPN’s Pac-12 blogger Ted Miller list his Mike Stoops
replacements, top of his list is the Wisconsin Offensive
Coordinator.

It may not be the right time for one possible
replacement

Former Oregon head coach Mike Bellotti’s name has been one
of the many names thrown around as a possible replacement
for Mike Stoops. But Bellotti, who is currently an
analyst, doesn’t know if this is the right time to return
to coaching.

Arizona football: Search for new coach begins

The Arizona Wildcats’ 2011 season is finished, done in by
a conspiracy of losses, injuries, inconsistent play and a
brutal schedule. Now their head coach is, too.

UA should check out these five

Just because Greg Byrne said he won’t publicly discuss his
next coaching candidate doesn’t mean we can’t.

Arizona Wildcats coaching search: Who’s next?

Arizona athletic director Greg Byrne says he won’t talk
about the search for a head football coach until he is
ready to make an announcement. In the meantime, everyone
else will be speculating.

Kevin Sumlin Has to Be Arizona’s
Top Target to Replace Mike Stoops in Tucson

Kevin Sumlin, who has Houston at 6-0, has to be the first
call. Spare me pipe dreams names like Chris Petersen (who
cares if he’s friends with the AD?), any of those hot SEC
assistants or Urban Meyer. Why even waste time with them?
I don’t know if those guys would return Arizona’s call.

Stoops, Chris Petersen Rumors Start
