LISTEN: Todd Bowles, Arizona Cardinals defensive coordinator

The better the Arizona Cardinals’ defense performs, the more likely it would seem Todd Bowles is not long for Arizona.

That’s just how things work in the NFL.

Bowles, who is just more than halfway through his second season as the team’s defensive coordinator, has become one of the hottest coordinators in the game. His defense finished first against the run and sixth overall last season, and this season, despite numerous personnel losses, is ranked third against the run and 11th overall.

The guy can coach, and is likely to be a target for many teams who find themselves looking for a new head coach in the offseason.

A guest of Doug and Wolf on Arizona Sports 98.7 FM Tuesday, Bowles was asked what he is looking for in his next move.

“I’m not looking for anything because I’m not looking for my next move,” he said. “If we have a great season and hopefully win the Super Bowl and that chance comes around, you look at it and you weigh your options.”

Last offseason, Bowles interviewed with both the Cleveland Browns and Minnesota Vikings — reportedly impressing both clubs — though while they each chose a defensive-minded coach, neither tabbed Bowles for the job.

A total of eight teams hired new head coaches last offseason, while another seven were hired the year before.

Though that seems like a lot, more jobs figure to be open again when the 2014 campaign comes to a close, with rumors circulating about possible openings in New York, Chicago and Atlanta, among other places. Bowles figures to be on the short list for many of them.

But the 50-year-old, who led the Miami Dolphins to a 2-1 record as the interim head coach in 2011, said it will take more than just being offered a head coaching job to get him out of Arizona.

“Every job isn’t a great job, so it has to fit in right,” he said. “The people have to be right, the organization has to be right and I have to feel comfortable, and I’m comfortable right here right now.

“So whatever is out there, whatever everybody says is out there, I’ll deal with it after the season if it comes to that.”
