Major League Baseball players had until 1 p.m. Eastern Time Friday to discuss salaries for the upcoming season in part of the league’s arbitration period. Four arbitration-eligible Diamondbacks avoided it by each signing one-year deals with Arizona.

Chris Owings, Patrick Corbin, Chris Herrmann and Randall Delgado all signed new deals with the Diamondbacks. It was reported that Owings will earn $2.3 million in 2017, while Delgado will get $1.775 million and Herrmann will receive $937,500. Corbin’s deal is not yet known.

These players avoided arbitration, meaning both sides were able to agree on a new salary instead of taking it to “court.” There, an unbiased law representative would decide how much the player should receive in the upcoming baseball season based off the player’s past performance and statistics from around the league.

Agreeing to a new monetary figure is important not just for each sides’ financial reasoning, but it also means no ill feelings should be expected from either side.

A player can only file for arbitration if he is between his fourth and sixth season at the professional level. After six seasons, a player can become a free agent if he can’t agree to a new deal with his team, and there he can try to get the contract he thinks he deserves from one of the other 29 teams in the league.

Owings played 119 games for Arizona last season at shortstop, second base and center field. He had a .277 average, earning five home runs, 24 doubles, 11 triples, 49 RBI and 20 walks. He tied Philadelphia’s César Hernández and San Francisco’s Brandon Crawford atop the triples leaderboard in the National League.

Corbin pitched in 36 games for the Diamondbacks last season, tallying a 5-13 record with a 5.15 ERA. He started 24 of those contests, also recording one save with a 1.561 WHIP.

Herrmann played his first season with Arizona in 2016 after playing four seasons for the Minnesota Twins. He played in 56 games at numerous positions, including each outfield spot, first base and catcher. He batted .284 and hit six home runs, to go with 28 RBI, all of which were career-highs.

Delgado appeared in 79 games in his fourth season with the Diamondbacks in 2016, posting a 4.44 ERA. The right-hander out of the bullpen logged 75.0 innings, giving up eight home runs with a 1.507 WHIP.

Right-handed pitcher Shelby Miller, who the Diamondbacks traded for last offseason, filed for arbitration over a matter of $400,000.

Miller started 20 games for Arizona in 2016, posting a 3-12 record with a 6.15 ERA. In 101.0 innings, he gave up 14 home runs.

Newly acquired right-handed pitcher Taijuan Walker also filed for arbitration.

Walker was part of a trade that sent second baseman Jean Segura to the Seattle Mariners. Walker went 8-11 with a 4.22 ERA and 1.236 WHIP last season for Seattle.
