For perfect fit, Coyotes’ Shane Doan would waive no-trade clause to chase Stanley Cup

Arizona Coyotes captain Shane Doan admitted Monday that he would consider waiving his no-trade clause to chase a Stanley Cup, but only if the move was “perfect.” Furthermore, Doan told media in Edmonton that he is not pushing to leave Arizona and that trade rumors didn’t originate from him.

“It would have to be so perfect, so right. It’s pretty hard for it all to line up perfectly,” Doan said of the possibility of agreeing to a trade, according to Sportsnet’s Mark Spector.

Spector’s Sportsnet colleague, Elliotte Friedman, first reported the Coyotes captain would possibly consider being traded.

“(The Coyotes are) looking at it like, you know, he’s not going to be here forever, we have to see who else can be leaders of the team, maybe we might have to move on, but we want to put Shane Doan in a situation where he would be happy,” Friedman said on television.

Doan responded to the report Monday, confirming he would consider a trade in the right situation. Knowing what the right situation is, however, is the tricky part.

“That’s kind of the issue,” Doan told the Edmonton media. “Last year, no one would have picked San Jose and Pittsburgh to be playing in the Cup Final. Afterwards you’d say … they’re both great teams. But no one was picking them [at the March trade deadline]. They were picking Washington and Chicago.

“There are so many different teams that can go on a run.”

Doan was honest about how he would approach the Feb. 28 trade deadline. He added that the Coyotes have not yet approached him about the possibility of being traded.

“If it comes to that point, we’ll sit down and talk about it,” he said, according to Tim Campbell of NHL.com. “It’s happened in the past, it’s just that no one’s ever heard about it. We’ve had the discussion and said yes or no and for the most part it’s been no.”
