Gathers, No. 21 Baylor beat TCU 66-59 in overtime

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) — Rico Gathers had 17 points and 18 rebounds to lead No. 21 Baylor to its first Big 12 Conference win of the season, 66-59 over TCU in overtime Saturday.

The Bears (12-3, 1-2) won their sixth-straight over TCU — all since the Horned Frogs joined the Big 12 — but the previous five wins were by an average of 20.8 points. This time, there were 11 lead changes and 18 ties.

Taurean Prince scored 17 points, including Baylor’s only two field goals in overtime, but fouled out with 1:33 to go in the extra period. When Kenny Chery hit two free throws with 46.7 seconds left to make it 61-56, it gave the Bears their largest lead to that point. Chery finished with 13 points.

TCU (13-3, 0-3) only made one field goal in overtime. Kyan Anderson led TCU with 16 points.

Tied 53-all with a minute left, Chris Washburn missed a shot for TCU. Chery’s shot was blocked by Shepherd and the Bears committed a shot clock violation, turning the ball over with 1.7 seconds left.

Anderson caught the inbounds pass for the Frogs but stumbled and wasn’t able to get a shot off as time expired.

A 9-4 run by TCU late in the second half fired up the home crowd and gave TCU its largest lead of the game at 49-44. In the run, Karviar Shepherd and Trey Ziegler each had big dunks, Anderson swished a 3-pointer with and then Anderson found Amric Fields on a fast break for a finger-roll layup. Only Prince could stop TCU’s momentum. He had a steal that he turned into a fast-break dunk for Baylor, then Lester Medford’s three-point play made it 49-49, the 16th tie.

There were seven lead changes and nine ties in the first half, and it looked as if Baylor might start to take charge late in the half after Taurean Prince made a 3-pointer and Johnathan Motley followed 40 seconds later with a fast-break dunk to give Baylor a 28-25 lead. The Bears had been in a stretch where they made only 2 of 17 from the field.

TCU closed the half by making 3 of 4 free throws to tie it.
