NEW YORK (AP) — Two-time defending champion Serena Williams overpowered Caroline Wozniacki to win the first set of the U.S. Open women’s final 6-3.
The top-ranked Williams is trying to become the first woman with three straight titles at the year’s last Grand Slam tournament since Chris Evert won four in a row from 1975-78.
Denmark’s Wozniacki, seeded 10th, is in her second major final and first since the 2009 U.S. Open, which she lost to Kim Clijsters.
Both players looked tight early. There were five consecutive breaks before Williams finally settled down to hold to go up 5-2. She then served out the set.
Williams had more unforced errors than winners (16-15). But under pressure from Williams’ power, Wozniacki was uncharacteristically sloppy, with 10 unforced errors to just one winner.
Williams is looking to match Evert and Martina Navratilova with 18 major titles. The 32-year-old American had struggled at Grand Slam tournaments since her U.S. Open victory last year.
