PARIS (AP) — Maria Sharapova overcame some shaky serving Saturday to win the first set 6-4 in the French Open final against Simona Halep.
Sharapova has struggled with her serve and had four double-faults in the first set on Court Philippe Chatrier. But she was able to take the lead with steady groundstrokes that kept Halep on the run.
Sharapova won the title at Roland Garros in 2012 to complete a career Grand Slam. She lost in last year’s final to Serena Williams.
Halep, a Romanian who is seeded fourth this year and was ranked only 57th heading into last year’s French Open, was playing in her first major final.
