NEW YORK (AP) — Duane Notice scored 15 points and South Carolina picked up its first win over a top-10 team in nearly five years by beating No. 9 Iowa State 64-60 on Saturday at Barclays Center.
Notice also had six rebounds and four assists as the Gamecocks (11-1) shot 46 percent and led most of the way. Sindarius Thornwell and Tyrone Johnson had 13 apiece points for South Carolina, which was able to turn back any Iowa State run and picked up its first win over a top-10 team since knocking off Kentucky on Jan. 26, 2010.
Jameel McKay, playing in his third game for Iowa State after becoming eligible, scored 15 points and Dustin Hogue also had 15. Niang, who came into the game averaging 16.1 points, was held to 10 points.
Notice’s biggest basket was a transition layup off a bounce pass by Johnson that made it 56-51 with about 4 1/2 minutes left. That came after Georges Niang badly missed a jumper in the lane while being surrounded by four defenders.
Niang hit two free throws with just under three minutes remaining that made it a 56-54 deficit. Niang picked up his fourth foul on the next possession and South Carolina took a four-point lead.
Hogue made two free throws with 2:01 remaining to get the deficit back to two but a three-point play by Thornwell extended South Carolina’s lead to 61-56 with 10 seconds remaining. Niang then split a pair at the line and a layup off the glass by Thornwell late in the shot clock gave the Gamecocks a 63-57 lead with just over a minute to play.
After missing its first 15 attempts, Iowa State finally connected on a 3-pointer when Naz Long hit one from the corner with 47.6 seconds remaining. With 22.2 seconds left, Demetrius Henry was called for an offensive foul on a moving screen but Long missed a 3-pointer and Thornwell hit a free throw with 13 seconds left for the final margin.
Iowa State extended its streak to 244 games with a 3-pointer, but went 1-of-18 and shot 35 percent overall.
Niang scored his first basket on a running hook shot with 3:47 remaining that made it 32-25. A long jumper by Bryce DeJean-Jones made it a 36-35 game with 44 seconds left but the Cyclones were unable to get their first lead at halftime.
South Carolina: Forward Shamiek Sheppard played his first collegiate game in Brooklyn and second overall. Sheppard played at South Shore High School and missed the first 10 games with a knee injury. … Coach Frank Martin is 8-3 against Iowa State. His first 10 meetings against the Cyclones came when he coached Kansas State (2007-12).
Iowa State: Iowa State was hoping to get a home-and-home series going with Big Ten schools Minnesota and Nebraska but when that did not happen, the Cyclones took the meeting with South Carolina. … Iowa State played in New York City for the second time in 10 months. The Cyclones lost in the Sweet 16 to eventual champion Connecticut at Madison Square Garden.
