LOS ANGELES (AP) — Vasyl Lomachenko had the audacity to believe he could win a world title in his second professional fight after a glittering amateur career.
Instead, the two-time Olympic gold medalist discovered just how much he still didn’t know about boxing.
Lomachenko (1-1, 1 KO) has shaken off the disappointment of his March loss to veteran Orlando Salido, who missed weight and repeatedly clobbered Lomachenko with low blows on the way to a split-decision victory.
After regrouping back home in Ukraine, Lomachenko gets another shot at the WBO’s 126-pound belt Saturday night in Carson, California, against Gary Russell Jr. (24-0, 14 KOs), who followed a very different path to a title fight.
While Lomachenko likely advanced too quickly, Russell has been criticized for moving much too carefully since turning pro in 2009.
