West Ham goalkeeper Adrian scored the decisive penalty kick after Everton counterpart Joel Robles hit the underside of the crossbar, leading the Hammers to a 9-8 shootout win following a 2-2 tie Tuesday night and into the fourth round of the FA Cup.
Adrian saved Steven Naismith on Everton’s second kick, and with the score 4-4, Robles stopped Stewart Downing. Starting in goal for the Toffees since American Tim Howard tore a calf muscle on Dec. 28, Robles hit the bar with Everton’s 10th attempt. Adrian took off his gloves and calmly slotted the winning kick to Robles’ right as the keeper dived to his left.
Host West Ham went ahead on Enner Valencia’s goal in the 51st minute. Everton, playing a man short after Aiden McGeady received his second yellow card in the 56th, built a 2-1 lead when Kevin Mirallas scored on a free kick in the 82nd and set up Romelu Lukaku’s goal in the 97th. Carlton Cole tied the score again in the 113th.
West Ham advanced to a matchup at third-tier Bristol City, which beat Doncaster 2-0 in another of Tuesday’s replays.
Second-tied Fulham defeated Wolverhampton Wanderers 5-3 on penalty kicks after a 3-3 draw and will face a Premier League opponent, Sunderland.
Chesterfield beat Scunthorpe 2-0 in the night’s other replay.
Nigel de Jong scored in the 86th minute to give AC Milan a 2-1 win over Sassuolo and a berth in the Italian Cup quarterfinals.
Giampaolo Pazzini put host Milan ahead in the 38th minutes but Sassuolo, which beat the Rossoneri in the league last weekm tied the score on Nicola Sansone’s penalty kick in the 64th.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic chested home a goal in the 72nd minute, leading Paris Saint-Germain to an interrupted 1-0 win at Saint-Etienne and a berth in the French League Cup semifinals.

Bastia rallied to for a 3-1 victory over Rennes, which finished two men short.
Felipe Caicedo scored twice to give Espanyol a 2-0 win over 10-man Valencia on and a place in the Copa del Rey quarterfinal on 3-2 aggregate.
Malaga moved into the last eight on 4-3 aggregate after a 3-2 loss to Levante.
