The coach had previously interviewed with Chicago, San Francisco and Atlanta prior to meeting with the Jets. New York was just 4-12 in 2014 and hasn’t made the playoffs since 2010.
The 51-year-old Bowles has served as the Arizona Cardinals’ defensive coordinator over the past two seasons, helping the team to a 21-11 record in that time.
The defensive guru’s only previous head coaching experience was an interim stint with the 2011 Miami Dolphins, who went 2-1 with him at the helm.

With Bowles apparently heading east, the Cardinals already have a replacement in mind, according to CBS Sports’ Jason La Canfora.

Reports of the Cardinals getting in contact with LeBeau, 77, emerged Monday. LeBeau has more than 40 years of NFL coaching experience, the last 11 as the defensive coordinator in Pittsburgh.
