The Arizona Diamondbacks signed right-handed pitcher Clay Buchholz to a minor-league deal, the team announced Friday.

Buchholz was an All-Star with the Boston Red Sox in 2010 and 2013. Over 16 starts in 2013, Buchholz went 12-1 with a 1.74 ERA.

In the next three seasons with the Red Sox, however, the 33-year-old has ERAs of 5.34, 3.26 and 4.78.

In December of 2016, he was traded to the Philadelphia Phillies but only made two starts in 2017 before undergoing surgery on his right forearm that ruled him out the rest of the season.

A free agent last offseason, Buchholz signed a minor-league deal with the Kansas City Royals in March but was released on Tuesday.

The D-backs have been in need of help in the rotation after Taijuan Walker underwent Tommy John surgery and Robbie Ray continues to miss time due to a strained right oblique. Matt Koch has taken the place of Walker in the rotation while Kris Medlen started in Ray’s place on Friday against the Houston Astros.

Buchholz has had an extensive history of injuries with his shoulder, neck, finger, hamstring, back and right arm.

He infamously threw a no-hitter in only his second major league start for the Red Sox in 2007 when he was 22 years old.

D-backs manager Torey Lovullo (2013-16) and general manager Mike Hazen (2015-16) both spent time in the Red Sox organization prior to arriving in Arizona.
