The Arizona Cardinals have signed running back David Johnson to a three-year contract extension, the team announced Saturday.

Johnson’s contract will now run through the 2021 season. It is a $39 million extension worth up to $45 million, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, with $30 million guaranteed.

The 26-year-old back made headlines when he opted to not attend the Cardinals’ June mandatory minicamp while he awaited a contract resolution.

He tweeted out a hint that his holdout was at an end back in July. The post included a picture of a Johnson wearing a helmet in the Cardinals locker room with the hashtag #ImBack.

Johnson took part in Arizona’s voluntary workouts this offseason and said he was 100 percent after undergoing wrist surgery following a Week 1 injury in 2017.

Johnson’s absence from minicamp allowed backups Chase Edmonds, T.J. Logan and D.J. Foster to take his reps in practices.

Selected in the third round of the 2015 NFL Draft by the Cardinals, Johnson has become one of the best running backs in the league.

He rushed for 1,239 yards and caught another 879 for a combined 20 touchdowns in 2016. The Northern Iowa product also became the first player to surpass 100 yards from scrimmage in 15 straight games to begin a season.

Last year, Johnson played in only the team’s first regular season game against the Detroit Lions before missing the rest of the year because of his wrist injury.

Johnson was heading into the final year of his contract, where he was slated to make $1.88 million.
