The Arizona Diamondbacks made a series of roster moves on Thursday, including the activation of outfielder Steven Souza Jr. from the disabled list from the re-injury of his pectoral muscle.

The team also recalled right-hander Silvino Bracho from Triple-A Reno, optioned right-hander Joey Krehbiel to Reno and placed outfielder Jarrod Dyson on the 10-day disabled list with what manager Torey Lovullo described as a “lower core” injury.

In addition, right-handed pitcher Randall Delgado has completed his rehab assignment but gets one day of “transition” before a roster move is required. He is expected to be added to the D-backs’ 25-man roster on Friday.

A FULL HOUSE IN THE OUTFIELD

Souza returns from the DL for the second time this season, having been on the shelf for 40 games after re-aggravating the same pectoral injury that held him out of the D-backs’ first 30 games of the season.

He was slotted into the five spot in the D-backs’ lineup for Thursday’s game against the Padres.

“I feel terrific. I feel 100 percent, I feel ready to go, and I think we’re in a good spot,” Souza said, adding that he didn’t feel tired or sore at all after making throws this time around his rehab.

Even with Dyson going on the DL on the same day that Souza was activated, the D-backs still find themselves with what most would describe as four “starting” outfielders. The wealth of players creates a logjam the staff will have to navigate, but Lovullo said the quartet of Souza, A.J. Pollock, David Peralta and Jon Jay will share the playing time relatively equally in a rotation.

Pollock returned from the DL on Monday.

“It’s fun, I think this is what everybody envisioned at the beginning of the season in spring training,” Souza said. “It’s taken a while, but now it’s time to go play some baseball and win some ballgames.”

A BULLPEN IN FLUX

The aforementioned Delgado is “on his way” back to the D-backs and will likely be activated on Friday, prompting another roster move, Lovullo said Thursday.

The 28-year-old Delgado hasn’t appeared in a big league game since July 15, 2017 — almost a year ago. But in 15 appearances between high-A and Triple-A in the minors this year in his rehab work, the right-hander owns a 3.38 ERA and a 1.125 WHIP in 16.0 innings of work.

In 26 games with the D-backs in 2017, Delgado had a 3.59 ERA and 1.181 WHIP with 60 strikeouts and 14 walks over 62.2 innings pitched.

Meanwhile, Arizona swapped Krehbiel out for Bracho, a move that was done to get a fresh arm in the bullpen after Krehbiel made two scoreless appearances in his first bit of big league experience.

“We’ve been rotating guys in and out. Joey did a tremendous job,” Lovullo said. “He did exceptionally well and that’s the message that we told him yesterday and to step back into the Triple-A environment and make sure he’s ready and an option for us the next time we have a need. In talking to him, I told him, ‘You can see there’s always a need for that guy, so make sure you’re that guy,’ and I think he’s going to be ready for it.”

Krehbiel pitched a total of 3.0 innings over two appearances, allowing no runs and one hit with two walks.

AVILA IS DAY-TO-DAY

Lovullo said catcher Alex Avila, who is on the 10-day DL with a hamstring injury, is nearing return.

“He is getting very close. He’s day-to-day,” he said.

Lovullo also said it is his preference to stay with three catchers on the 25-man roster.

“There’s some tough decisions to make,” he said. “We have a lot of conversations to have, and it’s just the nature of the business. Like I’ve been saying for several weeks now: It means we’re a good organization. When you have to make some tough decisions on very good players, it means you have a lot of depth. It means you are in the right position to do the things we’re hoping to do.”
