With James Jones in as acting general manager, the Phoenix Suns have applied for a disabled player exception for Darrell Arthur, who is not with the team due to an undisclosed health issue.

According to The Athletic’s Shams Charania, the Suns have applied for the exception with the NBA, potentially freeing space to add another player to the roster.

Arthur was acquired from the Brooklyn Nets in exchange for Jared Dudley and a future second round draft pick.

The nine-year NBA veteran has averaged 6.5 points per game and 3.5 rebounds per game in four seasons with the Memphis Grizzlies and five seasons with the Denver Nuggets.

If Arthur clears a doctor evaluation that deems him unable to play for a significant portion of the season, the Suns will be granted an exception contract to award a roster spot to a new player.

The Suns currently have four point guards on the roster, including three players with a combined two years of experience and Isaiah Canaan, who is six-year veteran coming off a gruesome ankle injury, which ended his season last year.

This move would potentially give the team more options to bring in another point guard, which has been a top priority linked to the Suns.

According to Bobby Marks of ESPN, if the exception is granted, Phoenix would have to opportunity to add a player with one year left on their contract at a value of $3.73 million.
