The Arizona Coyotes recalled goaltender Hunter Miska on Tuesday as a precaution, hours before Antti Raanta was expected to start in Minnesota.
Backup Darcy Kuemper was already day-to-day, so Adin Hill had been up from AHL Tucson with the NHL roster. That means he and Miska make up the Coyotes’ goaltending duo if Raanta can’t play.
After Raanta was missing from Coyotes practice on Monday, head coach Rick Tocchet told media that his starting netminder took a maintenance day. But he then implied that the trainers were looking at something with Raanta and said it would be a day-to-day matter.
Nonetheless, the Coyotes tweeted Tuesday afternoon that Raanta would start in goal. Therefore, it is theoretically possible that Miska’s precautionary recall was for some sort of injury to Hill, but that appears unlikely, given that Raanta did not practice on Monday and Hill did.
Additionally, Miska’s recall would put the Coyotes over the 23-man roster limit. CapFriendly’s transaction-tracking Twitter account reported just moments after the roster move that Arizona had placed Kuemper on injured reserve.
