ASU basketball to wear Black History Month jerseys vs. WSU

Feb 7, 2019, 11:32 AM

The Arizona State men’s basketball team will celebrate Black History Month on Thursday by wearing an adidas alternate jersey inspired by the early 20th-century Harlem Renaissance.

All adidas schools will wear similar uniforms whose designs reflect the jazz and dance ballrooms of that era. ASU will do so Thursday at 6 p.m. against the Washington State Cougars at Wells Fargo Arena, a game that will air on ESPN 620 AM.

The bean stitch texture for the Sun Devils’ maroon pops with shoulder and neck strips of gold.

The jerseys come with matching adidas shoes that “echo the colors of the jazz ballrooms so important to the era,” according to a press release.

“At adidas, we created the Celebrating Black Culture program as a way of honoring our past throughout Black History Month, but also across the entire calendar year,” said Adam Laitsas, senior director for adidas basketball in North America, in the release. “We firmly believe that through sport, we have the power to change lives, and we’re humbled to be able to celebrate these historical sport moments through the new Harlem Renaissance collection, and can’t wait to see each team wear these on-court.”

The Sun Devils women’s team will wear similar uniforms on Feb. 17 against Utah at home.
