Arizona Cardinals quarterback Brett Hundley said he’s “stoked” to join the team after signing a one-year deal this offseason.

Hundley is an Arizona native and attended Chandler High School before leaving the state to be the quarterback at UCLA.

After being drafted in the NFL, Hundley has been the backup quarterback behind Aaron Rodgers and Russell Wilson for the past four seasons.

During OTAs, Hundley joined 98.7 FM Arizona’s Sports Station’s Bickley & Marotta to discuss why he signed with the Cardinals and his relationship with head coach Kliff Kingsbury.

“I knew with Kingsbury coming, this would be a good fit for me,” Hundley said Friday on signing with the Cardinals. “It was a perfect opportunity and it was one I wasn’t going to pass up.”

Hundley said if he would have known the Cardinals were going to draft QB Kyler Murray, it would not have changed his decision to sign with Arizona.

Although Hundley hasn’t worked with Kingsbury in the past, he has enjoyed his coaching style so far.

“He’s doing a great job. I love him already,” Hundley said.

In Seattle and Green Bay, Hundley’s NFL head coaches have been Seahawks coach Pete Carroll and former Packers coach Mike McCarthy. Hundley said he sees a lot of resemblances in Kingsbury compared to Carroll and McCarthy as far as competitiveness and their “relaxed vibe” goes.

“He’s very open-minded and very open with his players,” Hundley said about Kingsbury.

The starting job at quarterback for the Cardinals looks to be set in stone with Kyler Murray starting week one, but Hundley said he will continue to compete for the starting job.

“I’m going to compete like the starter, I’m going to try and be the starter each and every week,” Hundley said.

For Hundley, the chance to challenge for the starting job is all that matters for him.

Hundley is also one of six players on the Cardinals’ roster that began their careers in the state of Arizona.

“We’re finally starting to get on the map as far as the talent level coming out of this state,” Hundley said.

Hundley’s playing time in the NFL has been minimal but he started nine games in 2017 after Rodgers suffered a broken collar bone in Week 6. In that stretch, Hundley went 3-6 throwing 8 TDs and 9 interceptions with 1,956 total yards.
