The biggest hockey story in the Valley on Friday night was the Arizona Coyotes making a selection in the 2019 NHL Draft, but a close second would be college hockey-related.

Shane Doan, the longtime captain of the Phoenix/Arizona Coyotes, can expect to see his son Josh suit up in maroon and gold as the younger Doan committed to Arizona State hockey, led by head coach Greg Powers.

“Proud to announce my commitment to ASU!” Doan tweeted Friday. “Thank you to all my friends, family, and coaches for being so supportive of my hockey journey thus far. Thank you ASU and [coach Greg Powers] for this amazing opportunity!”

ASU hockey already has Austin Lemieux, the son of Hockey Hall of Famer Mario Lemieux, and a commitment from Carson Briere, the son of former Coyotes center Daniel Briere.

According to Elite Prospects, Doan played for the Phoenix Jr. Coyotes U16 team last year and scored 17 points and 19 assists in 30 games. The right-shot forward is 17 years old and averaged more than a point per game in each of his last two seasons.

ASU hockey went 23-13-1 last season and capped its season with a 2-1 loss to Quinnipiac in the NCAA Regionals.

Doan played all 21 of his NHL seasons with the Jets and Coyotes franchise, playing in 1,241 games and scoring 347 goals with 845 points. He retired after the 2016-17 season and last year had his No. 19 retired by the Coyotes.
