The Arizona Diamondbacks made a trade on Wednesday ahead of the MLB trade deadline, but their first move of the day was one not at all rumored or expected heading into the day.

The D-backs dealt their No. 1 prospect, infielder Jazz Chisholm, to the Miami Marlins for the club’s No. 5 prospect, Zac Gallen, ESPN’s Jeff Passan first reported.

The D-backs soon announced the trade as being official, also announcing that utility man Blake Swihart was transferred to the 60-day injured list (strained right oblique).

Gallen, 23, is the No. 5-rated prospect in the Marlins’ system, according to MLB Pipeline. After putting up a 1.77 ERA in Triple-A this year, the right-hander has put up a 2.72 ERA in seven major league starts in his rookie season. His WHIP sits at 1.183, and he has a solid 10.7 strikeouts per nine. His walks have been a bit of a factor as he owns a 4.5 walks-per-nine rate, but he’s proven effective so far for Miami.

Chisholm’s departure marks a significant cost, given he’s the top-ranked youngster in a farm system that was recently ranked as the seventh-best in baseball by FanGraphs, but the 21-year-old was hitting .204 in Double-A Jackson this year with a .732 OPS.

If Gallen joins the big-league D-backs immediately, he would add much-needed rotation help to a club that has seen struggles from Zack Godley and injuries to Taijuan Walker and Luke Weaver. Jon Duplantier, who was with the D-backs for a time and then got hurt, was in Triple-A Reno as of Wednesday morning.
