The Arizona Cardinals entered Sunday’s matchup already down their starting running back in David Johnson.

The running back situation went from bad to worse against the New Orleans Saints as running back Chase Edmonds left the game with a hamstring injury.

In the third quarter, Edmonds went to pick up the blitz, getting hit by a Saints defender in the process. The running back managed to make it off the field under his own power, but was noticeably limping to the sideline.

He headed to the blue medical tent, but did not go to the locker room.

According to 98.7 FM Arizona’s Sports Station’s Paul Calvisi, Edmonds was trying to walk off the injury on the sideline.

It was tough sledding for Edmonds all afternoon, who recorded eight yards on seven carries, while catching just two balls for five yards.

With the thought that Johnson may be unavailable against New Orleans, Arizona went out and signed two running backs in Alfred Morris and Zach Zenner.

“There’s obviously a concern. We don’t have a back that’s been with us,” Kingsbury told reporters. “Brought Zach in and Alfred, but not one that’s been with us. There’s obviously concern.”

Morris was deemed inactive ahead of the game, leaving Zenner as the only healthy back in the lineup.

After the 31-9 loss to the Saints, head coach Kliff Kingsbury spoke on Edmonds’ status, saying there’s definitely a concern that the RB won’t be able to go against the San Francisco 49ers on Thursday night. It would be yet another blow to the running back room as ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Saturday night that Johnson is expected to miss the NFC matchup.

Entering play Sunday, Edmonds had rushed for 287 yards and four touchdowns on 51 carries and caught 10 receptions for 100 yards and a score.

Edmonds marked the second Cardinal injured against the Saints, with linebacker Cassius Marsh leaving the game in the first quarter with a concussion. He was ruled out for the rest of the contest.
