Arizona State Sun Devils freshman quarterback Joey Yellen has entered the transfer portal, he announced Monday on Twitter.

Yellen was second string quarterback behind fellow freshman Jayden Daniels. He played one full game for ASU this season, when Daniels was injured.

The Mission Viejo, Calif., native was a four-star prospect and was selected to the Under Armour All-American game with Daniels in high school. He committed to ASU months before Daniels did, but eventually lost the starting role to Daniels, who was the No. 2-ranked dual-threat QB in the nation in his recruiting class, per 247Sports.

Given that Yellen committed before Daniels was in the picture, it stands to reason that he would decide to pursue opportunities elsewhere.

Without Yellen, the Sun Devils still have Ethan Long, a freshman Swiss Army knife who can play multiple positions on the field, along with freshman Trenton Bourguet. Quarterback propsect Blake Shapen recently decommitted from the Sun Devils.

“Arizona State is a special place with great people, and I will leave with nothing but love for this program,” Yellen’s statement read, in part. “The relationships and bonds I have made here will last a lifetime.”

The 6-foot-3 signal-caller was 28-for-44 (63.4%) on passing for 292 yards, four touchdowns and two interceptions in the one game he played, which was at home against USC on Nov. 9. ASU lost that game, 31-26.
