The Western Athletic Conference announced Thursday the postponement of fall sports, which will impact various Grand Canyon University athletics, including men’s basketball.

The WAC announced it “voted [Thursday] to suspend all fall championship and non-championship athletics competition through the end of the calendar year.”

“It obviously was a difficult decision, and not one made lightly,” WAC commissioner Jeff Hurd said in a press release. “But it was one made after extensive discussion and consideration of all relevant factors as well as input from conference administrators and the Medical Advisory Committee. The health and safety of our student-athletes, the many others associated with our athletics programs and all those in our campus environments always will be the highest priority.”

The decision, however, impacts different sports in different ways. A press release said men’s and women’s cross country, volleyball and men’s and women’s soccer at the championship sports affected. The WAC said it would move those seasons to the spring if the NCAA conducts a spring season for those sports.

For non-championship portions of the schedules for men’s and women’s tennis, men’s and women’s golf, baseball and softball, competition won’t take place until Jan. 1, 2021 at the earliest.

Men’s and women’s basketball and men’s and women’s swimming and diving are postponed only through the end of October, “pending board discussion on winter athletics competition.”

GCU athletics has teams in all of the aforementioned sports.

Fellow teams in the WAC include California Baptist, Chicago State, Dixie State, New Mexico State, Seattle University, Tarleton State, University of Texas Rio Grande Valley and Utah Valley.
