The Arizona Diamondbacks agreed to trade left-handed reliever Andrew Chafin to the Chicago Cubs on Monday, reports Arizona Sports’ John Gambadoro. Arizona will receive a player to be named later or cash considerations, according to Gambadoro.

It was the third known deal of a busy trade deadline day for the D-backs.

Chafin had been a lefty staple in Arizona’s bullpen dating back to 2014.

Over the three seasons prior to 2020, Chafin’s WHIP never rose above 1.35. This season, however, he struggled in 11 appearances, posting an 8.10 ERA and 1.95 WHIP.

Even against lefty opponents this season, Chafin allowed a .294 batting average.

The D-backs placed him on the injured list on Aug. 19 with a finger issue, but manager Torey Lovullo said Sunday that he was optimistic about the pitcher making a return in the near future.

Monday was a busy day already for D-backs general manager Mike Hazen. Before dealing Chafin to Chicago, Arizona had already finalized a trade to send left-handed starting pitcher Robbie Ray to the Toronto Blue Jays for another left-handed relief pitcher, Travis Bergen.

The Diamondbacks then dealt center fielder Starling Marte to the Miami Marlins in exchange for pitchers Caleb Smith and Humberto Mejia, plus young arm Julio Frias.
