Arizona State University wide receiver Frank Darby did not return against USC after suffering a rib injury in the first half of the game Saturday.

Darby, who started, had one reception for two yards before exiting.

ASU head coach Herm Edwards told the broadcast at the beginning of the second half that he did not think the wide receiver would be able to return.

Cornerback Jack Jones, meanwhile, exited the game at multiple points in the third quarter with leg pain. He walked off on his own early in the quarter, but later had to be assisted off the field when the cramping resumed.

Even with the key absences, ASU initially manged to extend its 17-14 halftime lead. Jayden Daniels rushed on consecutive plays following a second-and-24 to convert the downs, and DeaMonte Trayanum punched home his second touchdown of the game with 6:47 to go in the quarter.

The passing game was slow, with the bulk of the yards coming on a 55-yard catch-and-run touchdown by Rachaad White.

ASU had control until late in the game, but fell apart in the final USC drives. The Trojans scored two late touchdowns and recovered an onside kick to take a 28-27 lead.

The Sun Devils were unable to score in its final attempt, which started with 1:20 to go in the fourth quarter, and lost the opening game of the season.
