Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher Jason Marquis out with broken right fibula

And the hits just keep on coming.

Recent Diamondbacks acquisition Jason Marquis is expected to miss the remainder of the season with a broken right fibula suffered after a third inning line drive from Angel Pagan of the New York Mets.

Marquis took the line drive to the right ankle area with one out in the third inning, but stayed in the game and made it through the inning. With one out in the fourth inning, Marquis simultaneously hit Josh Tole and went to ground clutching his ankle. He would not move until medical staff could check him out.

Marquis was acquired on July 30 from the Washington Nationals in exchange for minor league infielder Zach Walters. He was intended to round out the D-backs rotation, but his injury now leaves the team with some tough decisions.

The D-backs could turn to their bullpen to fill the gap, with Zach Duke or Micah Owings both a possibility to step in. They could also look to the minor leagues, where prospects Jarrod Parker and Tyler Skaggs have been throwing the ball extremely well, but may not quite be ready for the majors.

If they choose to look outside of the organization, the team still has some time before the trade deadline, but would likely cost them some prospects, which the D-backs need to hold on to.

Whatever the D-backs do, it will have to be a long-term solution as Marquis won’t be back this season.
