When the Arizona Cardinals drafted a wide receiver out of Pitt with the No. 3 pick of the 2004 draft, they probably didn’t expect him to become the legend and future Hall of Famer he is today.

Seventeen years later, Larry Fitzgerald holds not only multiple franchise records, but has climbed the charts in league stats as well.

Although Fitzgerald has yet to retire, it does not look like the wide receiver will be playing soon.

“To be honest with you, I just don’t have the urge to play right now,” Fitzgerald said Friday on his new SiriusXM Mad Dog Sports Radio show Let’s Go . “I don’t know how I’ll feel in September, October, November moving forward, but as of today I just don’t have the urge.”

In his time with the Cardinals, Fitzgerald led the league in receptions and receiving touchdowns twice, was named a first-team All-Pro and won an NFL Walter Payton Man of the Year award. He also holds franchise records for receptions, receiving yards, receiving touchdowns and total touchdowns.

Head coach Kliff Kingsbury told reporters that there is a roster spot open for Fitzgerald. The team thinks when he’s healthy and feeling good he can still contribute to the team and play at a high level.

As Fitzgerald ponders his future in football, let’s take a look at the career of one of the all-time greats after he wrapped up his 17th season.

1,432

Fitzgerald’s 1,432 career receptions hold the record for most by any player in NFL history with a single team, ranking second all-time for an entire career behind Hall of Fame WR Jerry Rice (1,549). It’s likely Fitz’s record may not be broken, as the next closest in the rankings with the Cardinals is Anquan Boldin (586).

17,492

Fitzgerald’s 17,492 career receiving yards also rank second in NFL history, again behind Rice (22,895). Fitz is the only active player in the league’s top 10.

121

Fitzgerald added just one touchdown to his career total last season, with an unreal 14-yard catch to help lead the Cardinals to victory over the Eagles. That TD became his 121st, ranking sixth all-time in the league.

11

Not only is this his jersey number, which will likely find its way to the rafters in State Farm Stadium, but the franchise-record number of times Fitzgerald was selected to the Pro Bowl. Fitzgerald and Rice are the only wide receivers in league history to be selected at least 11 times.

256

Fitzgerald has had at least one catch in 256 consecutive games in which he was active, the longest streak for any player with a single team and second-longest streak in NFL history. The last time he didn’t catch a pass in a game? Week 7 of his rookie season in 2004. If Fitz returns, he could get close to breaking Rice’s record of 274.

49

Fitzgerald has recorded 49 100-yard receiving games across his career, another franchise record for the future Hall of Famer.

17

With 17 seasons played, Fitzgerald ranks second all-time as longest-tenured player for an Arizona professional sports team. Shane Doan of the Arizona Coyotes takes first place after spending 20 seasons with the franchise.
