Five days after Remy Martin announced he was leaving Arizona State to pursue a pro career in the NBA, the Sun Devil senior guard entered his name into the transfer portal as a grad transfer.

The decision, which was reported by ESPN’s Jeff Borzello and The Athletic’s Doug Haller, sets Martin up to potentially play a fifth college season.

Martin averaged 19.1 points and 3.7 assists per game in 2020-21 and made the All-Pac-12 First Team for the second year in a row.

“I want you guys to know that I’ll be pursuing my NBA dreams,” Martin said in a video released by ASU last Thursday. “I want to say thank you to coach Hurley and his staff for allowing me to be myself and allowing me to play my game.”

Martin becomes the ninth ASU men’s basketball player to enter the transfer portal following the 2020-21 season. Freshman forward Marcus Bagley similarly entered both the NBA Draft and the transfer portal, saying he wanted to keep all options open.

The Sun Devils who have entered the transfer portal include: Martin, Bagley, Holland Woods, Chris Osten, Jaelen House, Taeshon Cherry, Pavlo Dziuba, Caleb Christopher and Kyle Feit.

Head coach Bobby Hurley has already been busy working to replace those players, plus senior guard Alonzo Verge Jr. and freshman guard Josh Christopher, who are expected to pursue pro careers.

The only regular rotation players returning from last season are senior forward Kimani Lawrence and junior big man Jalen Graham. ASU also brings back Luther Muhammad, who was part of last year’s team but sat out due to NCAA rules after he transferred from Ohio State.
