Arizona State football head coach Herm Edwards during the Pac-12 Conference’s Media Day on Tuesday couldn’t say much about an ongoing investigation of the program, but did say it isn’t impacting the team.

The NCAA is looking into whether Arizona State hosted recruits during the COVID-19 non-contact period, as well as other recruiting violations.

“It hasn’t been a distraction at all to be quite honest,” Edwards said.

“Our team is fine, we’re excited about playing, preparing for the season.”

Edwards also said the investigation isn’t having an impact on recruiting.

Despite the investigation of the program and one coach reportedly being put on paid administrative leave, Edwards said the team is focused and it has a lot to do with the players that decided to come back in the spring.

The Sun Devils open fall camp on Aug. 4 and begin the season at home against Southern Utah on Sept. 2.

Here’s some other highlights of the press conference:

Name, Image and Likeness – New age of college athletics

When asked about the new name, image and likeness rules in college athletics, Edwards said it has sparked a ‘new age’ in college sports.

“I think it’s a new day in college athletics,” he said. “This is part of the recruiting now and you better embrace it.”

Daniels is an ASU player already taking advantage of the new NIL rules that were put in effect on July 1.

On Tuesday, it was announced that Daniels has partnered with Venezia Pizza, a local pizzeria, where he will have his own featured pie, “The JD5.”

The Team

In what he predicts to be a competitive conference, Edwards likes the make-up of his team.

He said they had a very focused spring camp, which he credits to the veteran leaders they have in the locker room.

Edwards said in today’s game, you have to be able to throw the ball and score points.

He thinks the Sun Devils should fare pretty well through the air.

“I think Jayden, as well as the receivers, are further along,” Edwards said. “We’re built in a way where Jayden is going to have opportunities.”
