Arizona Cardinals 2018 first-round draft pick Josh Rosen signed with the Atlanta Falcons on Tuesday.

The Falcons made the move for Rosen after losing quarterback A.J. McCarron to a season-ending torn ACL injury in his right knee that he suffered in Saturday’s preseason game against the Miami Dolphins.

Rosen will compete with undrafted rookie Feleipe Franks for Atlanta’s backup role to starting quarterback Matt Ryan.

He has not taken part in a regular season snap since 2019.

Rosen was drafted 10th overall by the Cardinals in the 2018 NFL Draft. He started 13 games in his rookie season with Arizona after taking the starting job from Sam Bradford. Rosen threw for 2,278 yards with 11 touchdowns and 14 interceptions.

Arizona traded Rosen to Miami on the second day of the 2019 NFL Draft, just one day after drafting current starting quarterback Kyler Murray at first overall. The Cardinals received the 2019 draft’s 62nd overall pick in the trade, which was used to select wide receiver Andy Isabella.

The Cardinals also received a 2020 fifth-round pick in the Rosen trade. Arizona traded that pick back to Miami on October 28, 2019, for running back Kenyan Drake.

Atlanta is Rosen’s fifth team ahead of his fourth NFL season, and his third in just under a year. A list of Rosen’s transactions since last year is below.

  • September 4, 2020 – waived by Miami
  • September 6, 2020 – signed by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to practice squad
  • December 22, 2020 – signed by the San Francisco 49ers to active roster from Tampa Bay
  • August 17, 2021 – waived by San Francisco
  • August 24, 2021 – signed by Atlanta
