It certainly wasn’t the start ASU head coach Herm Edwards and the Arizona State Sun Devils wanted on the road in Washington, as miscues and penalties has them facing a 17-7 deficit at halftime to the Washington Huskies.

The Huskies got things going early, going 60 yards on eight plays to find the end zone on their opening drive.

ASU’s opening drive didn’t have an answer, going three-and-out, which Washington capitalized on their next drive to make the game 14-0.

It looked like the Sun Devils would be able to chip away at the Huskies’ lead, as ASU had a 1st-and-goal from Washington’s three-yard line.

However, the Huskies’ defense stuffed running back Rachaad White on two straight plays and then ASU was unsuccessful on third down, forcing Edwards to make a key decision.

Rolling the dice, Edwards kept his offense on the field for 4th-and-goal, but quarterback Jayden Daniels was bottled up trying to escape pressure, resulting in a turnover on downs.

The Sun Devils committed five penalties for 44 yards in the first half.

With starting right guard Henry Hattis out, the ASU plugged Spencer Lovell in his spot on the offensive line. It wasn’t the best first half for Lovell, has he had two false start penalties himself.

ASU’s defense was able to make adjustments after Washington scored its first two drives, forcing three straight Huskies’ punts.

The Sun Devils were able to get points before halftime, driving down the field before Daniels found tight end Curtis Hodges for an 18-yard score through the air.

Arizona State had 200 total yards of offense in the first half, 137 of them coming on the ground.
