Miley acts as D-backs stopper in win over Rockies: By The Numbers

Apr 7, 2014, 1:18 AM | Updated: 1:18 am

After nine games, Wade Miley has as many wins to his name as his team does theirs.

In his third start of the season Sunday, Miley propelled the Arizona Diamondbacks to a 5-3 win over the Colorado Rockies, tossing eight innings and allowing just two runs at the hitter’s sandbox otherwise known as Coors Field.

Mark Trumbo hit a home run for the fourth straight game, putting Miley and the Diamondbacks up 5-2.

Closer Addison Reed got into a little bit of trouble in the ninth, allowing Rockies baserunners to reach the corners, but a run-scoring double play helped limit the damage to just one run.

Here’s a look back at the win, by the numbers:

3

Starting pitcher Wade Miley improved to 3-0 in three starts at Coors Field with Sunday’s win. He was strong in the effort, helping his own cause by going 3-for-4 with an RBI while scattering seven Rockies hits — nine baserunners in total — and improving to 2-1 on the season. At the plate, Miley became the first Diamondbacks pitcher to collect three hits since Ian Kennedy accomplished as much on Sept. 12, 2010, also at Coors Field.

5

Miley and Reed combined to coax five double plays on the day, tying a club record.

6

A.J. Pollock collected just the sixth hit by a Diamondbacks leadoff man through the first nine games of the season. In all, the first spot in the batting order is batting 6-for-38 (.158) on the season, worse than every other spot, including ninth, where pitchers and pinch hitters have combined for a .171 batting average, collecting as many hits as Arizona leadoff men.

11

Shortstop Chris Owings collected his 11th hit of the season Sunday, improving his batting average to .367 and his on-base percentage to .387. The 23-year-old rookie has three stolen bases and a double to go along with his splits and he has appeared in all nine games for the Diamondbacks this season.

13

Miley stretched his outing to the eighth inning for the 13th time in his career. He has never recorded an out in the ninth inning of a game.

57

Diamondbacks pitchers have now allowed 57 runs — 54 earned — in the first nine games of the season, which is an average of 6.3 per game. The Minnesota Twins are surrendering runs at the same rate, but the two teams stand alone in that regard, as no other team has allowed nearly as many runs per game.

100

Trumbo’s two-run home run in the fifth inning of Sunday’s game was the 100th of his career, which is now in its fourth full season, and the fifth of the year. Only Luis Gonzalez has jumped out to a faster start in Diamondbacks history, logging seven homers in the first nine games of the 2001 season. Trumbo leads baseball with five home runs and 13 RBI.
