Beckett, Puig silence D-backs in series-clinching win for Dodgers: By The Numbers

...

Through the first five innings at Chavez Ravine Sunday, it appeared that Arizona Diamondbacks right-hander Josh Collmenter and the Los Angeles Dodgers right-hander Josh Beckett were headed for a good old-fashioned pitcher’s duel.

Only one problem, Beckett was pulled after 83 pitches and the wheels fell off for Collmenter.

Back in the D-backs’ rotation for the first time since 2012, Collmenter simply ran out of gas during his third trip through the Dodgers’ order.

In the bottom of the sixth, Carl Crawford followed a Dee Gordon single with a run-scoring triple of his own. And after Adrian Gonzalez reached base on an intentional walk, Yasiel Puig plated both on a laser three-run shot to left center.

That four-run frame was more than enough as Beckett was virtually unhittable during his five-inning outing, allowing one hit to go along with seven punch outs in the Dodgers’ 4-1 series-clinching victory over the D-backs.

Here’s a look back at the three-run loss by the numbers:

2:

Cliff Pennington made his third appearance in the two-hole as a member of the D-backs in the series finale. He went 0-for-2 with two walks.

For his career, Pennington has a .226 batting average in the No. 2 spot.

2-for-17:

Since launching his NL-leading sixth home run of the season last Sunday, Mark Trumbo has gone 2-for-17 at the plate since with four strikeouts.

3 Part I:

The D-backs tied for a season-low three hits in the loss. Arizona also collected only three base knocks in a 2-0 loss to Tim Hudson and the San Francisco Giants back on April 2.

3 Part II:

Beckett’s scoreless outing marked just the third he’s had since the start of the 2012 season. Two of the three have come in 2014.

4:

Since being yanked out of the rotation following a 6-5 victory in San Francisco April 10, Randall Delgado has excelled in the bullpen.

The right-hander has thrown five scoreless innings, including a perfect seventh frame Sunday.

11:

Starting center fielder A.J. Pollock was removed from Sunday’s game with left neck tightness before the sixth inning.

Pollock was 0-of-2 at the dish with two strikeouts at the time of his removal.

12.5

With Sunday’s loss, Arizona falls to 1-7 on the season in contests played against Los Angeles — good for a .125 winning percentage vs. the Boys in Blue.

15:

Los Angeles first baseman Adrian Gonzalez extended his league-high hit streak to 15 games with a double in the second inning.

Of those 15 games, six have come against Arizona pitching.

18:

While the D-backs’ 21-game start (5-16) is nothing to write home about, they have been forced to play some stiff competition. Of its first 21 games, Arizona has has played 18 against teams with winning percentages of at least .500.

118:

Crawford’s RBI triple was the first of the season for him, but the 118th of his MLB career. Since his debut in 2002, no one has more career triples than the Dodgers outfielder.

In fact, he’s one of eight players in the history of the game to have at least 100 home runs, 100 triples and 400 stolen bases. Ty Cobb, Lou Brock, Tris Speaker, Frankie Fisch, Kenny Lofton, Tim Raines and Paul Molitor are the others.
