The Arizona Diamondbacks announced four roster moves while assigning pitcher Luke Weaver to the 10-day injured list retroactive to April 8.

Weaver struggled in his only outing of the season, failing make it through one inning in relief in the D-backs debut.

He allowed three hits and one earned run on 23 pitches in his first appearance in relief in his career with Arizona.

It was his first relief appearance in the majors since he was with the St. Louis Cardinals in 2018.

“There was a little bit of newness to what we were asking him to do coming out of the bullpen,” manager Torey Lovullo said on Sunday.

“Our red flag went up when we saw what type of velocity he had, but nothing was mentioned until the next day.”

The official diagnosis on Weaver was right elbow inflammation which could have contributed to that lack of consistent velocity, something Lovullo cited as a reason for moving Weaver to the bullpen in the first place.

“I just felt like it was going to be the best version, he would get the best version of him in small spurts for right now,” Lovullo said on Monday.

Weaver dealt with elbow injuries through portions of the 2021 season.

In a corresponding move, the D-backs recalled pitcher Kyle Nelson who has made two appearances with Triple-A Reno Aces this season without allowing a run.

Nelson was claimed by Arizona in 2021 after appearing in 10 games that season with Cleveland.

The D-backs also outrighted pitchers Caleb Baragar and Humberto Mejia to Reno.
